Morning tour of Quito with its rich Iberian legacy of churches, cathedrals and baroque architecture. (B)

DAY 3 / SAT : QUITO / BALTRA – EMBARK CRUISE

CORMORANT
Morning flight to the port city of Guayaquil and on to Baltra Island. Embark the CORMORANT and sail to Santa Cruz Island. Take a short hike through a lush Scalesia forest riddled with tortoise trails and enjoy breathtaking views of the twin craters Los Gemelos and Cerro Chato. Captain’s Welcome Dinner. (B,L,D)

DAY 4 / SUN : GALAPAGOS CRUISE

CORMORANT
Cruise through Bolivar Channel to observe whales and dolphins. Disembark on Isabela Island at the Tintoreras Islet where its turquoise, crystalline waters are inhabited by white-tipped reef sharks, Galapagos Penguins, sea turtles, sea lions, and marine iguanas. Afternoon hike or horseback ride to the Sierra Negra Volcano boasting the largest basaltic caldera in Galapagos and impressive views. (B,L,D)

DAY 5 / MON : GALAPAGOS CRUISE

CORMORANT
Morning dry landing on the ancient lava flow at Moreno Point on Isabela Island where crystal tide pools have formed. See pink flamingos, White-Cheeked Pintails, Common Gallinules, white tip reef sharks, and sea turtles. In the afternoon take a traditional ‘panga’ into Elizabeth Bay watching for sea turtles and stingrays. Brown Pelicans diving for fish, sea lions, penguins, Blue-footed Boobies can be spotted. Possibly catch a glimpse of a humpback whale! (B,L,D)

DAY 6 / TUE : GALAPAGOS CRUISE

CORMORANT
Visit Mangle Point on Fernandina Island, one of the world’s most pristine island ecosystems. The volcano “La Cumbre” dominates the landscape with lava fields reaching the ocean. Here you find Flightless Cormorant nesting sites and the Galapagos Hawk. On Isabela Island, land at Urbina Bay with its terrestrial coral reef where stingrays and sea turtles swim, and Flightless Cormorants, pelicans, and marine iguanas can be seen. You will be dazzled by the breathtaking view of the Alcedo Volcano. (B,L,D)

DAY 7 / WED : GALAPAGOS CRUISE

CORMORANT
Return to Fernandina and take a one-mile walk at Punta Espinoza on lava terrain to observe its fascinating combination of barrenness and abundance of wildlife, with a high density of marine iguanas, sea lions, Sally-light Foot Crabs, flightless cormorants, Galapagos penguins, and Galapagos hawks. On the northwest of Isabela is the secluded Tagus Cove, an erstwhile favorite anchor for pirates and whalers. Take an invigorating hike to a high point with an impressive view of Darwin Crater Lake and the lava flows of Darwin Volcano. (B,L,D)

DAY 8 / THU : GALAPAGOS CRUISE

CORMORANT
Morning wet landing on the black sand beach of Puerto Egas (James Bay) on Santiago Island and hike over a dry trail to spot curious Galapagos Hawks and Quick-footed Galapagos Lava Lizards. A walk down the shoreline takes you to gorgeous tide pools and grottos with several colonies of fur seals. In the afternoon visit beautiful Espumilla beach, a nesting site for sea turtles, where snorkeling is highly recommended. Marine iguanas lounge and Sally Lightfoot Crabs attract hunting herons. Witness the amazing dramatic cliff landscape over Buccaneer Cove. (B,L,D)

DAY 9 / FRI : GALAPAGOS CRUISE

CASA GANGOTENA
Hike up 82 feet of cliff-face with fabulous views from El Barranco, known as Prince Phillip’s Steps. Take a half-mile trek through Palo Santo vegetation where the variety of birds will dazzle Red-footed Boobies, Short-eared Lava Owls, Galápagos Swallows, and Galápagos Doves are abundant. Enjoy the afternoon at Darwin Bay on Genovesa Island, home to hundreds of bird species including Nazca Boobies and Darwin’s finches. Follow a trail to a cliff’s edge for amazing views. After the walk you can enjoy snorkeling and swimming along the cliffs. (B,L,D)

DAY 10 / SAT : BALTRA / QUITO

CASA GAGONTENA
Visit Seymour Norte to see swallow tailed gulls and bodysurfing sea lions! Your cruise ends at Baltra where you transfer to the airport for your return flight to Quito. The afternoon is free for independent exploration. (B)

DAY 11 / SUN : DEPART QUITO

Transfer to Quito Airport for your departure flight. (B)

Meet and road transfer to Otavalo in the Ecuadorian Andes (at 8,500 feet) to the wonderful 17th century property of Hacienda Cusin, a magical spot for great food, hiking and quiet reflection. (B,D)

DAY 11 / SUN : OTAVALO

HACIENDA CUSIN
Visit the Otavalo Indian Craft Market, famous throughout the Andes for its handicrafts, textiles, tapestries, and much more. Enjoy lunch at one of the charming local haciendas. Afterwards, visit the native weavers and musical instrument makers in the small indigenous Village of Peguche. Peguche is also famous for its Sacred Waterfall. (B,L,D)

DAY 12 / MON : OTAVALO

HACIENDA CUSIN
Full day spent exploring the charming Indian villages of the high Andes, each known for its own particular craft, such as woodcarvings, fantastic leather goods, and bread-dough figurines. Enjoy some hiking in the surrounding mountains and around the volcanoes and lakes. (B,L,D)

DAY 13 / TUE : OTAVALO / QUITO / AMAZON JUNGLE

NAPO WILDLIFE CENTER
Early return drive to Quito. Morning flight to Puerto Francisco de Orellana (Coca) in the Amazon Region. Take a 2-hour scenic trip down the Napo River in motorized canoes and then switch to dugout canoes to arrive at the Napo Wildlife Center on Añangucocha Lake in Yasuní National Park. There are good possibilities of various monkey sightings as well as large birds such as toucans, parrots, and even macaws en route. (B,L,D)

DAY 14 / WED : AMAZON JUNGLE

NAPO WILDLIFE CENTER
Get an early morning start to visit the parrots’ clay licks when parrot activity kicks off. Hike to the Quichua community of Añangu for a chance to interact with a local family and witness their daily activities. Continue hiking through the Terra Firme Forest to the second parrot clay lick. Orange-cheeked Parrots, Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet, 6 species of manakins, and occasional Scarlet and Red-and-Green macaws can be seen here. Box lunch will be provided at the Parrot Clay Lick Observatory. (B,L,D)

DAY 15 / THU : AMAZON JUNGLE

NAPO WILDLIFE CENTER
Visit a canopy tower to experience life above the forest floor where you can observe flocks of colorful tanagers, Blue-and-yellow Macaws, Spider Monkey, and two species of large toucans. Return to the lodge for lunch. Return to the Terra Firme Trail to discover the forest interior. Afterwards explore the lakes & creeks by dugout canoes, keeping an eye out for the Giant Otter family! DAY 16 / FRI : AMAZON JUNGLE / QUITO

CASA GANGOTENA
Return boat trip on the river and flight to Quito for arrival around noon. Transfer to your hotel. Your final afternoon in Ecuador is free for independent exploration of this historic city. (B)
